Course calendar descriptionAnalog and digital electronic circuits based on the devices introduced in ELEC 252 will be studied. The course is subdivided into two parts; the design and operation of amplifiers and the operation of common logic families. Particular attention is paid to the transient and frequency response of the circuits. The course also includes a study of feedback as applied to the design and analysis of electronic circuits. The laboratory work is design oriented and complements the lecture material.

Course Materials:

Required text:
  • A. Sedra and K. C. Smith, Microelectronic Circuits, 6th Edition, Oxford University Press, 2009.
CAD software:
  • The circuit simulator Cadence will be used in this course. The software is available in the Bain lab in the second floor of Walter Light Hall.

Outline of Topics

Differential amplifiers using BJT's, MOSFET's and BiCMOS devices, current mirrors, multi-stage amplifiers, high-frequency transistor device models, amplifier frequency response, feedback amplifiers, amplifier gain and phase margins, design of digital logic gates using CMOS transistors.
