Ruth Rees' Homepage

Dr. Ruth Rees is a Professor in the Faculty of Education.  She coordinates leadership programs for school boards (for Ontario and internationally), and delivers the Ontario College of Teachers’ approved Principals’ Qualifications Program to aspiring principals (again, from schools within Ontario, Canada, or abroad).  Her work experience includes involvement in leadership programs as far away as China and Africa.

Dr. Rees was the past chair of the University-wide Council on Employment Equity, with an objective of accommodating and improving accessibility for everyone at Queen's. She firmly believes that equity should be everyone's business, in everyone's job description, with appropriate accountability and monitoring. She has seen many positive changes occur in Queen's over the years, and continues to be active in achieving true equity in both education AND employment at Queen's through its policies as well as its practices.

Dr. Ruth Rees is involved in all three aspects of work in the Faculty of Education:

  1. in the BEd programme
  2. in the Graduate programme; and
  3. in Continuing Teacher Education.

Each is described below.

Work in the BEd programme

Some of her work and research has centred on issues of equity in education.  She now sometimes coordinates and teaches in the mandatory Critical Issues in Equity and Adapting Teaching to Meet the Needs of Exceptional Learners in Education courses:  PROF 100, 101, 120, 135. She has worked with Dr. Nancy Hutchinson and Dr. John Freeman in developing many web-based resources for topics of equity and exceptionality, to help practicing teachers have accessible and useful lessons and teaching materials.

Work in the Graduate programme

Dr. Rees teaches, researches, and practices in the area of educational leadership.  She has developed and taught mainly the following two graduate courses:

EDUC 860,  Studies in Policy and Organizational Theory in Education.

A small curriculum development project is underway to offer a blended course in Educational Policy, and to put many of the resources for this course online.  A current course outline is available online for the summer 2006 course, as well as a bibliography on policy resources.

EDUC 862, Educational Leadership

This site offers course information and online resources.  As leadership involves working with and through others, Dr. Rees is believes that work on this topic can be best accomplished in face-to-face interaction.
