Assignments

WATCH THIS PAGE FOR CHANGES AND/OR FURTHER EXPLANATIONS OF ASSIGNMENTS.

Assignments should be submitted in a format appropriate to the assignment. Submitting assignments electronically as an email attachment or on disk or constructing a web page or CD-ROM are all valid options. Additional details about electronic submissions will follow. Format, traditional or alternative must be agreed upon, in writing, with the professor prior to the due date.

  1. Participation:

Class discussions are extremely important to the quality of your experience in this course. In general, assigned readings will be discussed on Tuesday, with video extensions of the material on Thursday. Since this course is compressed into 6 weeks, participation over those short 6 weeks becomes important.

  2. Project: You will complete a major project on a topic of your choosing that connects in a meaningful way to women, gender and music. Choose an area within this field that is of particular interest to you.

Possible areas include: cross-cultural issues of gender and women in/and music; women musicians or women in music in a non-western culture; Canadian women in/and music; "women's music;" gender and women in performance art (musical); women blues singers; gender in jazz, country, rock or rap; women, gender and music during a particular historical era (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, etc.) or social institution (schools, churches, etc.); status of women musicians; biographical studies of particular women composers, performers, conductors, teachers, etc.; gender and music in theatre.

The project should be developed into a format that becomes a resource for you. It can be a traditional paper, but this is not required. Consider notebooks, web pages, card files, a performance and extended program notes. In any case, the project must include a bibliography, references or documentation. Use a style manual (Turabian, MLA, APA, etc. or one of the ones specific to music) for your citations.

Additional details of this assignment will be discussed in class and then posted on this page.
