Ruffing Guard Squeeze

[ Home | Catalogue | Indirect Squeeze Index ]

Simple ruffing guard squeeze:

In the simple ruffing guard squeeze, the squeeze operator has two single threats in addition to the ruffing-finesse threat, all against the same opponent. The squeeze card must then be a trump.

If the single threats lie in the same hand, then the ruffing guard must be recessed. As always with a ruffing squeeze, there must be two entries to the hand containing the ruffing menace (the first entry may be the squeeze card itself). Reduction to a simple squeeze is impossible, since both single threats are guarded from behind, and any combination of entries to the ruffing guard threat is possible:

If the single threats are split between the two hands and the ruffing threat lies opposite the squeeze card, there must (as always) be two entries to the ruffing threat. If the single menace in the hand containing the ruffing guard menace includes an entry, then the position will reduce to a simple squeeze, so the second entry must be in the suit of the lone menace, and the first entry will be either in the same suit or in the ruffing guard suit itself:

If the single threats are split between the two hands, and the ruffing threat lies with the squeeze card, then the lone threat must be recessed, there must be a re-entry to the ruffing threat in the suit of the lone threat, and there must be an entry to the lone threat in the suit of the other single threat (or a ruffing entry in that suit) - all other possible entry configurations would permit a simple squeeze. Furthermore, the opponent with the long guard in the ruffing threat must hold a trump which could be used to interrupt the potential cross-ruff:

Cross-ruffing variants

There are also several cross-ruffing variants, in which a single threat opposite the ruffing guard threat is an ordinary ruffing menace.

Again, when the single threats are split between the two hands, several potential positions reduce to simple squeezes. When the squeeze card lies in the same hand as the ruffing guard threat, then all three threats must be ruffing threats; when the squeeze card lies opposite the ruffing guard, an extra entry is needed to the hand with the ruffing guard, and that entry can lie in the ruffing guard itself, or in the lone threat, or be a ruffing entry in the lone threat:

As before, when both single threats lie in the same hand, none of the possible positions reduces to a simple squeeze. The squeeze card can lie either opposite the ruffing guard threat (then the ruffing guard threat requires an extra entry - and if the extra entry is a second ruffing entry in the other ruffing threat, then the opposite hand will require a re-entry in one of the other threat suits) or with the ruffing guard threat (in which case the other ruffing threat requires an extra entry). In all, there are eight positions, five with the squeeze card and the ruffing guard threat in the same hand, three with them in opposite hands:

Entry-shifting variants

Finally, when entries in the threat suits are insufficient, there are two entry-shifting possibilities, one with the single threats split, the other with the single threats together:

Double ruffing guard squeeze

Few of the positions above lead to true double ruffing-finesse guard squeezes. Only the lone threat can be doubled (if the other threat is doubled, all threats can be guarded from behind - because of this, no compound positions are available), and if the position is not to reduce to an ordinary double squeeze, it must come from the second table above:

Entry in lone threat:

spade symbol Q J

heart symbol A
diamond symbol Q 10 8
club symbol --

spade symbol A 10

spade symbol K 9 8
heart symbol --
diamond symbol Q 10

spade symbol 2
heart symbol --
diamond symbol 3 2
club symbol 3 2

In either case, South leads a trump, and West must discard a diamond to avoid giving up a trick immediately. The heart goes from North, and East is caught in a simple spade-diamond ruffing squeeze.

Compound ruffing guard squeeze

There is only one position which permits a compound ruffing guard squeeze (in which there are two ordinary double menaces in addition to the ruffing guard menace). Other such endings can be devised, but they cannot arise in legal play.
