This is the second most common of the simple positional squeezes (besides the positional simple squeeze, there are also two very rare positional squeezes, the see-saw ruffing simple squeeze and the jettison simple squeeze). The key point is that when South cashes the club A, the discard from the North hand is determined by West's choice of discard; if instead East holds the guards, then the North hand gets squeezed first (the simplest example of what has been called a "nightmare squeeze", in which the victim is squeezed out of a potential squeeze menace!) In practice, the split positional squeeze and the ordinary positional squeeze often overlap, in the sense that a given hand could be regarded as of either type; this is illustrated by the following endings:

Split positional (heart menace is South's J):

Variations

1) Idle cards: There are no idle cards in this ending.

2) Extra winners: Extra winners in either threat suit in either hand have no effect on the working of this squeeze. It is quite common in practice for the near menace to take the form of Jxx opposite AQx.

3) Losing squeeze card: The only requirement is that the squeezer be able to control any return.
