Positional Compound Squeeze

[ Home | Catalogue | Compound Squeeze Index ]

In the positional compound squeeze, both double threats lie in the same hand, and the single threat is not recessed (so these positions are all restricted). Then the last free winner must lie in the same hand as the single threat (to provide a discard for one of the double threats). There must be another entry to the hand with the single threat, which can be a winner in any threat suit, or even a ruff. This leaves three types, two of which occur in two variants, depending on whether the last free winners lie in the same hand or are split between the two hands. In each of the following cases, South cashes the club A, then the A of the suit abandoned by East; after South uses the re-entry to return to hand, the last club will squeeze both opponents on the same trick in a standard positional double squeeze:

1) Free winners together, re-entry in single threat:

In 1) and 2), North's idle card can lie in any of the four suits, unless North is on lead, in which case it must lie in clubs, the free suit.

5) has no counterpart with a blocked trump suit, since in such a position, South could succeed more easily by ruffing the losing card in the single threat.
