Alternating Compound Squeeze

[ Home | Catalogue | Compound Squeeze Index ]

Normally, an alternating threat (one in which either hand can retain a menace card) is no more powerful than a normal threat, and the flexibility can be ignored (in effect, one of the possible menace cards is really an idle card).

A) The conditions for a compound squeeze with one alternating threat are

This leads to five positions, all restricted (at least when the player guarding three suits abandons the alternating threat).

First, the positions in which the free suit is not blocked:

1) Re-entry in single threat:

2) Re-entry in alternating threat:

3) Re-entry in other double threat:

In each case, South cashes the club A.

If the free suit is blocked, there are two variants:

4) Re-entry in single threat:

spade symbol A 9 2
heart symbol A K 2
diamond symbol 3

heart symbol 5 4 3
diamond symbol A 2
club symbol K 2

5) Re-entry in other double threat:

spade symbol A J
heart symbol A 2
diamond symbol 4 3
club symbol A

spade symbol K Q
heart symbol K J
diamond symbol J 9 7
club symbol --

spade symbol 2
heart symbol Q 10
diamond symbol Q 10 8
club symbol 3

spade symbol --
heart symbol 4 3
diamond symbol A K 2
club symbol K 2

In each case, South cashes the club A.

B) Finally, there is the case of two alternating menaces. In this case, there is only one position, in which the key entry is a ruff:

spade symbol A 10 2
heart symbol A 2
diamond symbol A 2
club symbol --

spade symbol K Q J
heart symbol K J
diamond symbol K J
club symbol --

spade symbol 4 3
heart symbol Q 10
diamond symbol Q 10
club symbol 3

spade symbol --
heart symbol 4 3
diamond symbol 4 3
club symbol A K 2

South cashes the club A; whichever red suit West discards, North discards from the same suit; then South crosses to the now blank A of that suit, cashes the spade A for a discard from the other red suit, then ruffs a spade back to hand to play the last club for a standard positional double squeeze.
