Ruffing 2-Trick Triple Squeeze

[ Home | Catalogue | 2-Trick Triple Squeeze Index ]

Each type of criss-cross 2-trick triple squeeze has several ruffing variants. Either the lone threat or the other blocked threat can be replaced by a ruffing threat (if both are replaced by ruffing threats, the position is a cross-ruffing 2-trick triple squeeze). Often, though not always, there must be an extra entry to the hand containing the ruffing threat. As with the criss-cross type, we can classify these endings according to which threats are extended.

No extended threat

When neither threat is extended, and the lone threat is a ruffing threat, then there must be an extra entry, either in the suit of the ruffing threat itself, or in the suit of the other blocked threat, and we get two pairs of adjoint positions:

Last free winner in 2-threat hand

When neither threat is extended, and the blocked threat in the 2-threat hand is a ruffing threat, then there must be an extra entry, in any of the four suits, to the hand containing the ruffing threat. This gives a full adjoint family:

In any of these eight endings, on the club A West can discard

Lone threat extended

When the lone threat is extended, the situation is similar. If the lone threat is a ruffing threat, then there must be an extra entry in each of the other threats to the hand containing the lone threat. In the corresponding criss-cross endings, the 2-threat hand includes two winners in the suit of the lone threat, and here one or both of these winners can be replaced by ruffs, so once again there are two pairs of adjoint positions:

When the lone threat is extended, and the blocked threat in the 2-threat hand is a ruffing threat, then there must be an extra entry to the hand containing the ruffing threat. In this case, the extra entry can lie in trumps, in the ruffing threat, or in the lone threat (an extra entry in the third threat makes the extension to the lone menace unnecessary). This gives three members of an adjoint family:

Extra entry in trumps (squeeze card):

spade symbol A K
heart symbol Q 2
diamond symbol J 2
club symbol A

spade symbol Q J 10
heart symbol A K
diamond symbol K Q

spade symbol 9 8 3 2

Extended threat in 2-threat hand

XXXXX

If the lone threat is not extended, but the other blocked threat is, then the third threat must have an entry, and there is a pair of adjoint positions; when the last free winner lies opposite the lone threat, the lone threat must be recessed:

Last free winner in 1-threat hand:

spade symbol A
heart symbol J 10 2
diamond symbol A J
club symbol --

spade symbol K Q
heart symbol K Q
diamond symbol K Q

spade symbol K 9 3 2
heart symbol A
diamond symbol 2
club symbol 2

On the club A, West can discard

Finally, both blocked menaces can be extended; this requires the lone threat to include two winners in the short hand (there is no adjoint position in this case; if North has a diamond entry, then the spade threat doesn't need to be extended, while if North doesn't have a diamond entry, a heart discard defeats the squeeze):

Last free winner in 1-threat hand:
