Shortstop 1-Loser Triple Squeeze

[ Home | Catalogue | 1-Loser Triple Squeeze Index ]

These are unusual positions in which an opponent doesn't hold a true stopper in one of the threat suits, but the suit nonetheless doesn't run because of an entry shortage. The characteristic feature is a stopper which is shorter than its corresponding threat.

When a 1-card holding stops a 2-card threat, the position involves a jettison. When a 2-card holding stops a 3-card threat, the suit will involve an overtake/finesse position. Here are the two basic positions:

1) Jettison:

In each case, South cashes the club A. West can either discard a red card, conceding the extra trick immediately (North discards from the other red suit, and in case 2), follows with a spade finesse). If instead West discards a spade, then in case 1), South jettisons North's spade A and cashes two further spade tricks, while in case 2), South leads a low spade to West's K and North's A, then overtakes the spade J.
