Double-Cross 1-Loser Triple Squeeze

[ Home | Catalogue | 1-Loser Triple Squeeze Index ]

This class of 1-loser triples includes five positions, one automatic squeeze and a family of four closely related squeezes which are only necessary if the menaces are guarded on the "wrong" side. In each case, one of the threat suits is blocked with a winner in each hand, and there is a single re-entry to the blocked winner, either in the free suit or in one of the other threat suits:

1) Automatic (re-entry in free suit):

Specific comments:

1) This position should be compared with the variant of the blocked simple squeeze in which the compensation for the blocked winner takes the form of a two-trick threat in another suit. Here instead the compensation is an extra threat in a third suit.

2), 3), 4), and 5) In each of these positions, if East instead holds the guards, then South can play for a positional squeeze, cashing all black winners in the South hand, then crossing to the diamond ace and cashing all black winners in the North hand to squeeze East positionally in the red suits. 3) is a simple variant of 2), in which the re-entry threat has been converted into a split menace; 5) is a similar variant of 4). 4) is a variant of 2) in which the last two free winners lie in the same hand; the spade threat must be recessed to provide room for one of South's losers. The idle cards present in the North hand in 2), 4), and 5) can lie in any suit except diamonds (unblocking the diamond suit in this way would reduce the position to a twin-entry simple squeeze).
