What We Do At KAIROS

Kairos is a free and completely confidential counselling service which specializes in treatment for youth with gambling, alcohol or other drug problems. Counselling is provided on a one to one basis, however, family and group counselling are also available.

We also provide:

• Support to friends and family of substance abusers or problem gamblers through advice or direction.
• Information on substances and gambling to interested parties such as teachers, doctors, group homes, parents and youth.

We complete these tasks through:

• Understanding of diverse treatment approaches including harm reduction and solution focused approaches.
• Familiarity with the principles of prevention and health promotion.
• Conducting presentations to pre-teens, adolescence's, parents and professionals.
• Support of individuals who are incarcerated or on probation or parole that are dealing with addiction issues.
• Advocating and liaising on behalf of clients with a variety of community partners including:
  • Long term and short term treatment facilities,
  • Social service agencies across the province,
  • Elementary/Secondary schools,
  • Probation and parole services,
  • Phase I and II group homes, and
  • Quinte Detention Centre

The process of counseling differs from client to client but certain components are always present:

• Confidentiality
• Non-judgmental
• Promotion of healthy versus harmful choices
• Examination of problem solving skills
• Exploration of precursors to drug use
• Exploration of how much, how often and amount to determine a pattern of use
• Education of substances, addictions and their effects
• Awareness - is it a problem? - how is this determined?
