Poodle Background Set
The Poodle originated in Germany, where it was used as a water retriever. The long hair was cut short in some areas to make sure it didn't get too waterlogged, and left long over joints and vital organs so that the dogs didn't have problems from exposure to the cold water. This cut is known as the "continental" cut.
Standard poodles, the largest type, are also the oldest type of poodle. They stand about 22-26 inches at the shoulder, and come in many different colours. Miniatures reach up to 15 inches at the shoulder, with toy poodles, the smallest variety, being under 10 inches.
Poodles are one of the most intelligent and highly trainable breeds, but like other sporting breeds they have a great deal of energy.
Poodle coats can also be high-maintenance, but they are easy to care for if you get them clipped short. Just remember to make sure that they are warm enough in the winter if their coats are short.
Like all long-eared breeds, care must be taken to keep the ears clean. Less air gets into their ears and they are more prone to infections than dogs with upright or tulip (collie-like) ears.
