Current Projects

Study of the galvanic interaction between stainless and black steel in concrete. The parameters being investigated include different percentages of chloride (including zero percent) at the stainless steel reinforcement location.

Biographical Information

Brian Hope is a Past Chairman of American Concrete Institute Technical (ACI) Committee 222, 'Corrosion of Metals'. This committee has published ACI 222R-96, 'Corrosion of Metals in Concrete', ACI 222.1-96, 'Provisional Standard Test method for Water-Soluble Chloride Available for Corrosion of Embedded Steel in Mortar and Concrete Using the Soxhlet Extractor', and has sponsored sessions at recent ACI conventions on the use of alternative corrosion resistant reinforcement, means of mitigating chloride induced corrosion in reinforcement and strategies for corrosion protection for reinforcing steel in concrete. He is also a past member of the American Concrete Institute Technical Activities Committee which has responsibility for all the technical activities of the Institute

He has published extensively in the area of durability of concrete and in particular in the area of corrosion of steel in concrete (see  Publications)

Responsible for the preparation of general contract specifications for various hydroelectric development powerhouses, and for the structural design of continuous reinforced concrete highway bridges and various types of hydraulic gates including spillway gates and associated hoist structures, taintor gates, intake gates, sector gates, diversion tunnel closure gates and draft tube gates. Typical major projects: McCormick Dam Project No. 3 (160,000 hp), Quebec; three overpass bridges, Las Americas Expressway, Puerto Rico; gates for the Red River Floodway inlet control works, Manitoba; gates for the Pointe du Buisson control structure, Quebec.
