31 November 2008: Leaving...
Home...
I'm leaving HPCVL and off back to Houston in 2009.
29 October 2007: Travel...
Reno
Off to the Sun HPC Consortium and SuperComputing in Reno in November.
17 October 2007: Solaris...
More of the same
Did an upgrade to snv_72.

Must update this thing more often...

29 May 2007: Solaris...
More of the same
Did an upgrade to snv_66. Hi Ralph, it tastes like working.
29 May 2007: Solaris...
Wireless
An upgrade to snv_64a has delivered support for my Intel 3945 wireless card. ifconfig and wificonfig did the trick.
31 March 2007: xkcd...
A comic strip
Well, it made me laugh: xkcd.
26 March 2007: Gentoo...
New laptop, sharing Solaris
Whilst I love the stability and performance features of Solaris (esp. for HPC stuff), sad to say it's not really up to laptop life. There's just not support to make life easy for wireless, an ipod and digital camera. Ian Murdock's arrival at Sun might change this though.

So I've put Gentoo on the box too. Window system is KDE with Beryl/Emerald.

10 February 2007: all change!
New laptop and Solaris
So, it was time for a hardware upgrade, methought. I ended up buying a Toshiba Tecra M5.

It's running Solaris Express (snv_52) and only Solaris. Yes, Solaris can be a desktop OS!

I've added nvidia graphics and opensound audio drivers to get things up to speed.

Extra software

21 November 2006: Solaris upgrade
Installing Solaris snv_50
I forgot to add an entry for snv_48, but it went just as for snv_46. I used the "Upgrade" option again...
$ cat /etc/release
                            Solaris Nevada snv_50 X86
           Copyright 2006 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
                        Use is subject to license terms.
                            Assembled 09 October 2006
$ uname -a
SunOS lem 5.11 snv_50 i86pc i386 i86pc

and all seems well. I have re-installed newer NVIDIA and OSS drivers. NVIDIA version 1.0.9629 appears to be trying to be too clever for its own good, and now requires the option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" to be set, otherwise startup lasts forever, e.g.,
Option      "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "CRT, TV"
The NVIDIA beta-drivers? Major kernel panic at reboot. So I think I'll skip that...

I've also installed the newest Studio Express compilers.

24 September 2006: Solaris upgrade
Installing Solaris snv_46
I used the "Upgrade" option...
$ cat /etc/release
                            Solaris Nevada snv_46 X86
           Copyright 2006 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
                        Use is subject to license terms.
                            Assembled 14 August 2006
$ uname -a
SunOS lem 5.11 snv_46 i86pc i386 i86pc

and all seems well. I have re-installed the NVIDIA and OSS drivers.

My Linux swap partition is now permanently kept with a bogus fdisk type; Linux doesn't seem to care and it prevents the Solaris installer getting confused about where existing installations are.

15 Aug 2006: Water, water, everywhere...
fishing for the potable
It occurs to me that as we pass from the age of pisces into the age of aquarius (now that would make a great song...) that we're
  • seriously depleting fish stocks in the oceans
  • starting to run short of potable water
Interesting confluence.

Of course, skeptical pinch of (sea?) salt and all that, given the various interpretations of zodiacal timeframes and what these "ages" might possibly mean...

28 May 2006: Power to the people
powernow! daemon
Set up the PowerNow daemon under linux. The default behaviour seems sane: it steps the CPU (Athlon K-6) down to 400MHz when idle, then pulls it back up to 1.5GHz when stuff happens.

This also keeps the temperature waaaaaay down in the idle state: 43°C opposed to 65°C at top-speed.

The cpufrequtils package allows you to inspect and change parameters (e.g. governors).

Now the question is: can I get Solaris to do the same?

27 May 2006: Solaris upgrade
Installing Solaris snv_38
Just noticed build 38 (5/06) is out, so downloaded, burned a DVD and set to work. This time an upgrade install was offered, so I did that.

Divers alarums, hat throwing etc.

$ cat /etc/release
                            Solaris Nevada snv_38 X86
           Copyright 2006 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
                        Use is subject to license terms.
                             Assembled 18 April 2006

$ uname -a
SunOS lem 5.11 snv_38 i86pc i386 i86pc

and all seems well. I have re-installed the NVIDIA driver.
22 May 2006: KDE
Doing that KDE thing
Decided to try it out.

Wow, that's a lot of configurable "eye-candy".

28 April 2006: Solaris upgrade
Installing Solaris snv_36
Just noticed build 36 (4/06) is out, so downloaded, burned CDs (my Apple laptop can burn DVDs I think, so maybe I should move to that, now that there are 5 CDs [plus languages] in the set) and set to work. For some reason, no offer of upgrade install, only initial, so I had to backtrack, copy off a few things and then install.

So we're up and running! Huzzah, balloons, pomp & circumstance, exeunt:

$ cat /etc/release
                            Solaris Nevada snv_36 X86
           Copyright 2006 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
                        Use is subject to license terms.
                             Assembled 20 March 2006
$ uname -a
SunOS lem 5.11 snv_36 i86pc i386 i86pc
$ psrinfo -v

and all seems well. I have re-installed the NVIDIA driver, GridEngine and ClusterTools.

I also found an OpenSound driver for Solaris x86 and the via8233 sound card I have. Previously I'd had no luck at all getting audio working on this machine with Solaris. Now it works fine. The osstest command did sensible things, and xmms from BlastWave makes the right noises.

26 April 2006: Solaris & NVIDIA
Installing NVIDIA driver for Xorg
Downloaded the NVIDIA driver for Solaris x86.

Installed fine, there's a script that comes with the driver called nvidia-xconfig that rewrites your xorg.conf to switch to the nvidia driver. Everything's working. I added a few options, e.g. turn off the NVIDIA logo, which I find a bit startling...

20 April 2006: Solaris & Parallel
ClusterTools & GridEngine
So we heavily use Sun stuff at work. This is good. I've been using Sun kit since '86 and SunOS/Solaris has consistently been my favourite.

I've installed ClusterTools & GridEngine on top of Solaris:

$ mpinfo -N
NAME UP PARTITION OS OSREL NCPU FMEM FSWP LOAD1 LOAD5 LOAD15
lem  y  run       SunOS 5.11  1    258.83 733.42 0.56  0.43  0.18

$ qhost
HOSTNAME ARCH NCPU LOAD MEMTOT MEMUSE SWAPTO SWAPUS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
global                  -               -     -       -       -       -       -
lem                     sol-x86         1  0.41  510.0M  251.0M  517.0M     0.0

A grid of 1 machine and 1 CPU isn't too exciting for parallel programming of course...so this is really just to test out version 6 of both CT and SGE and familiarize myself with new features so we can best understand a new deployment across a large grid.
17 April 2006: Solaris 11
Solaris upgrade
Downloaded the latest Solaris Express ISOs. This is build snv_33.

After experiencing the same non-booting problems as before, I went through the BIOS and turned off everything I could, especially the serial and parallel ports. After that, it booted fine and I was able to install snv_33 successfully. Re-enabling the ports afterwards didn't hurt anything.

In the process, I sort-of-accidentally-what-an-idiot whacked the Gentoo install (possibly fdisk-related with linux swap and solaris partition types). So I re-partitioned the disk and did an initial install.

Ho hum, maybe it's a sign that it's time to do something different. The machine is getting rather old and I've been thinking of saving up pennies to get something more exciting...

8 April 2006: Kingston
Snow Gone! Snow Gone!
Sunny all day. A bit brisk in the wind though, but that's hardly a surprise.
7 April 2006: Kingston
Snow!
It snowed this evening, quite heavily too for a while. I was out in the rain as it was just starting to turn to snow so I made it back just in time!
31 March 2006: Kingston
A new place to call home
So I've been here in Kingston for just over a month. Things are starting to warm up, after arriving to find -17°C in February, today turned out to be too warm to wear a fleece. You won't hear any complaints from me. Of course, the locals all keep telling me how mild this winter has been.

They say it gets rather humid in summer, but after living in Houston...I suspect I'll cope better than they think.

31 March 2006: Apple
New laptop at work
PowerBook G4 12"

I rather like this little beast. Easy to carry, nice user interface, everything works nicely. It's mainly for making notes, email, and presentations. I also got an AirPort Extreme with it.

3 March 2006: Linux / Sony Vaio
Hotplugging interfaces
With pcmciautils and ifplugd I now have both the RealTek and wireless PCMCIA card being picked up and configured automatically (DHCP) upon insertion.
21 February 2006: Stuff
Across the ocean (redux)
And now I find myself in Canada working at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. I'm managing operations for HPCVL which supplies academic (& beyond) High Performance Computing services to this part of the country.
17 September 2005: Stuff
Across the ocean
Sadly, my time in the US is at an end, and I'll be moving back to Europe, for at least a while. I hope to be back though. So in the meantime, I'll be back in the digital wasteland of North Devon in England, and so I've been making sure the winmodem still runs under linux in the Sony Vaio. This seems to be the case with the latest hsfmodem package (emerge under gentoo), because I can at least talk to the modem with AT commands (hand-rolled kernel 2.6.13.1).
23 August 2005: Stuff
Gimme that old time religion!
All bow before the Flying Spaghetti Monster! Arrr, matey!
23 July 2005: Solaris 10
More Solaris upgrade travails
Downloaded the latest Solaris Express ISOs. This is build snv_17.

Like snv_15, the CD starts to boot, but stalls during hardware detection. No idea why yet...

17 July 2005: Mercurial Marathon Material
Quicksilver
I just finished Quicksilver, although maybe "it finished me" might be more accurate!
11 July 2005: What?

weird!
2 July 2005: Word Power
Me. pedantic?
So one of the hosts of Live8 in the US said Stevie Wonder was the "coup de gras" of the concert.

Interesting. I presume she meant coup de grâce but if so, I'm sure Stevie Wonder and Bob Geldof would be rather upset...

Or maybe she meant pâté de foie gras, which is somewhat mind-boggling!

24 June 2005: Solaris 10
Solaris upgrade travails
Downloaded the latest Solaris Express ISOs. This is build snv_15.

The CD starts to boot, but stalls during hardware detection. No idea why yet...

As does the Schillix live CD...

4 June 2005: Fromage!
cameras
I bought a Sony DSC-S90 digital camera. It presents itself as a VFAT file system over the USB cable. I'm glad to report it "just worked" with linux.

Having some problems with Solaris. It knows the device is there, but I can't get it to see the file system.

8 May 2005: FreeBSD 5.3
qemu again
qemu booted FreeBSD quite nicely and the networking works fine with DHCP.
4 May 2005: Solaris 10
qemu & Solaris
I'm trying out qemu to run Solaris 10 as a guest OS on my Linux desktop.

It's installing at least, with the graphical installer too! I'm only doing the core install of Solaris to start with as a proof of concept. If it all works well, I will probably do a full installation.
