Domino Theatre Inc. wins top prize at provincial festival.

On Sunday, May 22, 2011 over 250 people from all corners of Ontario attended the Theatre Ontario awards brunch on the stage of the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts.

Professional adjudicator Jane Carnwath had seen four plays presented by Community Theatre groups from across Ontario. She gave the award for Best Production to Domino Theatre’s presentation of “Trying” by Joanna McClelland Glass, directed by Penny Nash. Jane commended the subtle, nuanced, yet powerful staging of a play about a retired American justice who is approaching death and a hard working, straight up and sensitive secretary from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Bill Morrow and Naomi Ballance won Best Actor and Best Actress awards for their wonderful performances that gave the audience a chance to see their relationship grow from prickly to warm in a clear unsentimental way.

Michael Gourgon won an Adjudicator Award for Sound Design that was subtle, thoughtful and effective.

The entire group of Domino volunteers was awarded the Outstanding Co-ordinate Production as chosen by the Festival Stage Manager. This award recognized all the Domino volunteers for their professionalism, courtesy and obvious love of theatre as they unloaded a set, built, set dressed, lit it in quick time and then reversed the process later that evening after the performance.
